His real name was Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral and Abranches.
His mother was Maria Angelina castelo-Branco and his father was José de Sousa Mendes.
He was born to an aristocratic family. He attended School and studied Law at the University of Coimbra.
In 1908 he married to Maria Angelina, his childhood sweetheart. He was sucessful as a Diplomat in several Countries. As a Portuguese Diplomat in France he saved 30.000 Jews from the Nazi terror because he issued false passports. He died on April 3rd, 1954, in complete poverty and far from his family.
